Best Friends 4 Ever: Microbiota and the Endocannabinoid System
My second piece for Project CBD, clocking in around 2,000 words, is a primer on interactions between the gut microbiome and the endocannabinoid system. On an individual bases, we already know that these two systems (one human, one not) are key to health. What we don't fully understand but are starting to grasp is that they in fact work closely together, sending messages in both directions and communicating with other systems and organs throughout the body, including the brain and central nervous system, in order to maintain homeostasis.
As far as my editor and I were able to ascertain, this here is the only article you'll find outside the scientific literature that provides more than a surface-level look at how they interact -- and, in turns out, how phytocannabinoids derived from cannabis have been shown to have to have a beneficial effect on the gut microbiome in mice and rats, and a positive relationship with gut health in humans.
